2023 Year-End Update

December 4, 2023March 7, 2024 News

2023

Year-End Update

From planning to go-live anticipation, we’re going behind the broadband curtain with updates and plans for 2024.

“CVFiber, when can I get high-speed Internet?”

This is the number one question we’ve been hearing since we connected our first customers in October of this year.

Q&A

We’re here to answer your most frequently asked questions.

  • Why is it taking so long?
  • We’re seeing the trucks.
  • We’re seeing the fiber hanging in front of the house.
  • Does CVFiber still exist?

Q: So, when can I finally get connected?

A: Our 20 member towns are strategically split up into puzzle pieces and they do not always follow town boundary lines. Before we can start scheduling installations, we have a checklist to ensure that the network meets broadband standards. For each puzzle piece, we need to:
  • 1. Design the network.
  • 6. Install underground conduits.
  • 2. Order materials.
  • 7. Splice fiber in the field with testing.
  • 3. Obtain permits and licenses.
  • 8. Red line corrections to the network design.
  • 4. Hang fiber optic cable on utility poles.
  • 9. Complete Optical Line Terminal (OLT) installation, turn up, and testing.
  • 5. Define weekly passings.
  • 10. Receive final broadband approval to schedule installations.

Q: My town is marked as “eligible for service” on your website. What does that mean?

A: “Eligible for service” means construction is nearing completion. This is followed by network testing which is required to meet broadband standards for connectivity. Installations are lined up next for your area once testing is complete.

If you haven’t preregistered and your address is eligible for service, now is the time if you have not already done so. Preregistration notifies our team that you are interested in high-speed reliable Internet. Signing up gives you access to the shopping cart to select your Internet package.

If you preregistered but haven’t signed up for your package, don’t fret! We’ll be sending a notification email with a unique link to sign up for your Internet package after full networking testing is complete.

Once you select your Internet package, you’ll be on the list for a site survey.

Q: Is a site survey required?

A: Yes. Before an installation takes place, a site survey is required. This survey is done entirely outside the premises. It determines the complexity of your installation. Our technicians will:

  • Locate the closet fiber terminal box to your location,
  • Find the best route to this terminal and measure its distance to your home,
  • Assess the type of drop that currently exists (aerial or buried), and
  • Determine whether tree trimming and/or traffic control will be required.
Good news!

No appointments are required for a site survey! You do not even need to be present. Each “eligible for service” area includes a list of everyone that has either preregistered or signed up for their Internet package. This list is updated automatically and is sent to our technician team so they can plan their routes accordingly. If you signed up or preregistered in an “eligible for service” area, no further action is needed by you at this time.

HERE’S THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION

Q: If I’m “eligible for service,” when do I get connected?

This depends on your location. In 2024, CVFiber has a goal to launch in parts of:

  • Calais
  • East Montpelier
  • Worcester
  • Middlesex
  • Woodbury

Installation scheduling

If you are in an available service area, and if you have a standard aerial drop we can connect you quickly, based on a day and time that is convenient for you.

If you require an underground connection, you are responsible for arranging and paying for the cost of underground conduit. You can find conduit contractors and specifications on our website.

CVFiber Network Map as of December 4, 2023

Calais

Site surveys and installations are underway. Did your neighbor get connected and you’re still waiting down the road? Calais is split up into six CVFiber network areas. Two are now eligible for service on our website: Area A and Area B.
  • Calais: Area A
  • Calais: Area B

Eligible for service with installations underway.

Network construction and testing is complete in Area A. We have the green light to perform site surveys and schedule installations in those areas. Based on tremendous interest from the Calais community, we are extending site surveys and installations into the first area of 2024.

Town updates

Installations forecasted to begin early 2024.

We’ve been working ahead to have site surveys completed in advance of our official launch in Calais: Area B.

Read more about Calais: Area B in our B Intersection group below.

THE B INTERSEction

2024 Area B:

Calais, East Montpelier, and Worcester

Network construction and testing are almost there! We do not yet have the green light to schedule installations, but we are proactively doing site surveys in this area. Fiber is being strung from the same direction so we’re able to gain efficiency with these three areas bundled in the same engineering plan. As a result, our team will be able to schedule installations as soon as construction is complete, and we receive final testing approval. Installations are forecasted to start in the beginning of 2024.

Midyear 2024

Worcester Area A and Middlesex Areas A & B are grouped together.

Worcester is similarly split up into three network areas: Area B will be launching earlier in the year (see above) as part of the 2024 B Intersection. Area A is expected to launch midyear.

Middlesex is split up into three CVFiber network areas. Two will be eligible for service midyear 2024: Area A and Area B.

Construction status

Construction has begun, but we are in the early stages here compared to Area B: Calais and East Montpelier.

Forecasted timeline

Depending on mother nature and the number of interested households in Calais and East Montpelier, we are forecasting mid 2024 to begin site surveys and installation in areas of Middlesex and Worcester.

Preregistration encouraged

If you are located in Middlesex and Worcester, you may be eligible to preregister at this time. You will be notified as soon as your area becomes eligible for service to select your Internet package.

Woodbury

Construction has started in parts of Woodbury. Woodbury is divided into several areas with the larger Area B forecasted to begin installations in the second part of 2024.

This area of Woodbury is scheduled to launch with its neighboring area in Calais: C.

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2025

Future build areas are being considered for 2025.

Variable factors contribute to our next steps for 2025. As we get closer, we’ll be updating communities with CVFiber’s Community Memo. Although step 1 of designing the network is complete for all of our member towns, we are focusing our efforts on construction and testing in Calais, East Montpelier, Middlesex, and Worcester in 2024.

Contact Us

CVFiber is coming, and once it’s here, fiber Internet will be here to stay.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to build out the network. If you have any questions, we’re just an email or phone call away.
